Freight Class Calculator

Enter your pallet or box dimensions and weight to get the NMFC freight class from density. It uses the 2025 13-subprovision density scale — the same engine as the full FreightPrep calculator.

How freight class is calculated

Since the July 19, 2025 NMFC restructure, most freight is classified by density — pounds per cubic foot. Density is weight divided by cubic feet, and cubic feet is length × width × height (in inches) ÷ 1,728. The denser the shipment, the lower the class and the lower the rate.

A key move for a shipper: because class comes from density, palletizing so the load is denser (fewer, taller-but-heavier pallets) can drop it into a lower class — sometimes a bigger saving than the extra pallet costs.

Need the whole quote, not just the class?

FreightPrep turns your boxes into pallets, computes the class of each, and builds a copy-ready LTL summary you can paste into FedEx Freight, LTL Select and other carriers — free, in your browser.

This tool provides estimates only. Final freight class and rates are set by the carrier and the NMFTA, not by this calculator — the carrier can reweigh and reclassify at pickup. Freight class here is density-based only; the specific commodity’s NMFC item number may override the density-based class shown here.
